Three �鶹ӰԺ Environmental Engineering graduate students have earned 2023 scholarships through the American Water Works Association (AWWA).

Emma Wells (Advisors: Amy Javernick-Will and Karl Linden) is recipient of the HDR One Water Institute Scholarship. Her work focuses on water quality and utility risk management. She says that her research is only successful through collaboration and she will use the scholarship funding while “working with operators, regulators, and utility management to understand their experiences with risk management. I will use these funds to meet with my partners and collect data. I hope that my work can be used to support utilities as they navigate ever-changing environmental, regulatory, and technical contexts to provide safe water"

Nadia Jorgensen (Advisor: Scott Summers), recipient of the Holly A. Cornell scholarship from Jacobs, says the scholarship will help with her future plans. “I hope to continue evaluating granular active carbon performance for controlling unregulated and regulated disinfection by-products across a range of water matrices and developing laboratory skills to analyze contaminants in samples.”

Emma Payne (Advisor: Karl Linden) is receiving the Dr. Philip C. Singer Scholarship. Her thesis is about improving UV advanced oxidation efficiency through tailored wavelength and radical promoter innovations. Emma in interested in passing on her knowledge to the next generation, "I am committed to being a good mentor and teacher, in addition to researcher and graduate student. As much as I thoroughly believe that my research will advance the field of environmental engineering, I also recognize that helping others to achieve their goals and contribute to the field is equally important. In this vein, I have pursued several mentoring and teaching opportunities and will continue to seek these opportunities out during my graduate career and beyond.”

The Board of Directors of the Colorado Groundwater Association has announced the availability of the Harlan Erker Memorial Scholarship for 2020. They will again be awarding one or more scholarships of up to $2,000 in April. The scholarship is open to graduate students and senior undergraduates (as of Fall 2020) attending an accredited college or university in Colorado who are working on groundwater-related topics.

Application Deadline: April 3, 2020

To Apply:

1. Submit an original letter detailing your proposed research or independent study project. Topics must involve some aspect of groundwater science or engineering. Please discuss how the scholarship funds will be used to enhance your work.

2. Submit an official transcript of grades and proof of enrollment (scanned copies acceptable) and contact information for either your advisor or a faculty member familiar with your studies.

The application is now open to apply for a prestigious scholarship offered by Jeppesen, a Boeing company. The scholarship covers travel and living expenses to spend one semester studying at TU-Darmstadt, a leading engineering university in Germany, followed by a full-time paid internship at Jeppesen in Frankfurt. Eligibility:

MS student in engineering or computer science
Demonstrated interest in: human factors, data analytics, digitalization, autonomy, engineering, or computer science theories to create advanced aviation research and product concepts
U.S. citizenship or permanent residency

Commitment to serving as an ambassador of CU �鶹ӰԺ and the United States
Commitment to presenting your experience to Jeppesen and CU stakeholders

The Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad (DDRA) Fellowship Program provides opportunities to doctoral candidates to engage in full-time dissertation research abroad in modern foreign languages and area studies. The program is designed to deepen research knowledge and increase the study of modern foreign languages, cultural engagement, and area studies not generally included in U.S. curricula.

Program Features

Students may request funding to support overseas research for a period of no less than six months and no more than 12 months. Funds support travel expenses to and from the residence of the fellow and the country or countries of research; maintenance and dependent allowances based on the location of research for the fellow and his or her dependent(s); an allowance for research-related expenses overseas; and health and accident insurance premiums. Projects may focus on one or more of the following geographic areas: Africa, East Asia, Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands, South Asia, the Near East, Central and Eastern Europe and Eurasia, and the Western Hemisphere (excluding the United States and its territories).

Eligible Applicants
Institutions of higher education (IHEs) in the United States are eligible to apply for grants under this program. As part of the application process, students submit individual applications to the IHE. The IHE then submits all eligible individual student applications with its grant application to the U.S. Department of Education. A student is eligible to receive a DDRA fellowship from their IHE if he or she

is a citizen, national, or permanent resident of the United States;
is a graduate student in good standing at an IHE;
is admitted to candidacy in a doctoral degree program in modern foreign languages and area studies at that institution when the fellowship period begins;
is planning a teaching career in the United States upon completion of his or her doctoral program; or
possesses sufficient foreign language skills to carry out the dissertation research project.

Application

IFLE expects to make 100 new awards totaling approximately $3.5 million under the fiscal year (FY) 2020 DDRA program competition. The FY 2020 application is available online through the U.S. Department of Education’s G5 system between Dec. 17, 2019 and Feb. 18, 2020.

The Center for Science and Technology Policy Research (CSTPR) within the Cooperative Institute for Research in

Environmental Sciences (CIRES) at CU-�鶹ӰԺ is offering a $1500 award to an eligible CU-�鶹ӰԺ student.

Background

This award is named in honor of Rad Byerly, who earned a B.A. and M.A. in physics at Williams College, and a Ph.D. in physics at Rice University. After several years in laboratory research as a postdoctoral fellow at the Joint Institute for Laboratory Astrophysics (JILA), at CU-�鶹ӰԺ, Rad moved to Washington, D.C., for a long career in science policy. He served more than twenty years as staff on the Science Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives, ultimately as staff director to Chairman George E. Brown (D-CA) who believed, as did Rad, that government-funded scientific research had a duty to serve society and its citizens as well as to expand knowledge of the natural world. In the late 1980s Rad also directed the Center for Space and Geosciences Policy at CU-�鶹ӰԺ, and at the end of his career, delighted in mentoring and working with graduate students at CSTPR/CIRES as they grappled with problems of science, politics, and public policy.

Award Eligibility

Applicants must be full-time, CU-�鶹ӰԺ campus, degree-seeking graduate students in good standing in any academic department.

Award Criteria

A commitment to making a significant contribution to science and technology policy through a career in academia; state, local, or federal government service; the private sector; voluntary organizations; journalism and the media; or some other form of public service that advances the role of science and technology in service to society.
Demonstrated potential for such contributions through publications, community outreach and organization, or paid and/or voluntary employment either on or off campus.
High academic achievement.

Application Process

Applicants shall submit a two-page statement describing how they meet the criteria for the award; an unofficial academic transcript; CV; and one letter of recommendation by midnight December 4, 2019 to ami.nacu-schmidt@colorado.edu. The award will be distributed in January 2020.

The award recipient is expected to make one presentation in CSTPR's noontime seminar series on a topic of choice and write one article for the CSTPR blog, Prometheus in Fall 2020.

The Arkansas River Basin Water Forum is now accepting applications for the 2019/20 college scholarship program. The scholarships are intended to offset the students educational expenses and offer the fantastic opportunity to attend our Forum, free of charge, to network and meet water resources professionals. The scholarship is open to junior or senior level undergraduate students and graduate students at all of Colorado’s colleges and universities. The deadline to apply is December 1^st. In the past 4 years, we have awarded 10 scholarships to students at the following institutions:

PhD candidate Lauren Magliozzi was recently awarded the Aiken Endowed Memorial Graduate Research Fellowship from CU �鶹ӰԺ’s Center for Water, Earth Science and Technology!

Magliozzi is a first-generation college student who grew up on a small farm in Massachusetts. She studied chemistry and geology at Smith College, but decided to switch to environmental engineering for her PhD because she wanted to apply her research to help solve environmental problems.

Magliozzi is pursuing her PhD as a partnership between CU �鶹ӰԺ and the U.S. Geological Survey, with Professor Joseph Ryan at CU �鶹ӰԺ and chemist Brett Poulin at the USGS. She is studying dissolved organic matter-mercury redox chemistry with electrochemistry.

This summer, Magliozzi will take two trips to several Arctic national parks in Alaska (Bering Land Bridge, Cape Krusenstern National Monument, Gates of the Arctic, Kobuk Valley and Noatak) as part of a partnership between the National Park Service and the USGS to study the impact of permafrost thaw on hydrological regimes in arctic ecosystems with Poulin and other USGS and National Park Service scientists.

The Aiken Fellowship was established to honor George R. Aiken for his significant contributions to understanding aquatic ecosystems during his 40-year career as an organic geochemist with the USGS.

Magliozzi’s research is a direct continuation of Aiken's dissolved organic matter and mercury research. Mercury is a globally mobile neurotoxin, and its fate in the environment greatly affects ecosystem and human health. Permafrost contains high levels of mercury.

“The Aiken Endowed Memorial Graduate Research Fellowship will allow me the opportunity to join an exciting USGS and National Park Service field partnership where I can apply the methods I have been developing in the lab to study mercury redox chemistry in Arctic ecosystems, where permafrost is melting at an unprecedented rate and releasing mercury into the environment,” Magliozzi said.

The Aiken fellowship aims to support collaborative research for advancements in water and earth science that contribute to the wise and sustainable management of Earth’s natural resources within the context of current environmental challenges.

Tara Randall was recently awarded the WateReuse Association Colorado Student Scholarship, which will help her conduct meaningful water reuse research that spans social, cultural and economic barriers in Israel and Uganda.

Randall is pursuing her MS in environmental engineering at CU �鶹ӰԺ, working alongside Professor Karl Linden. Her research investigates UV-LED disinfection technology for biofouling mitigation during irrigation with recycled wastewater effluent. The project is an international collaboration with Technion, the Israel Institute of Technology.

Through the Engineering for Developing Communities certificate program, Randall has worked with Water for People on water and sanitation projects in Uganda. Her experience with drinking water, wastewater and water reuse began in 2014 with the California Department of Water Resources (DWR).

As a student engineer, Randall worked with a team that investigated and monitored greenhouse gas emissions caused by water transportation and management techniques across California. They also examined the role of water reuse to meet emission reduction goals within DWR.

After graduating with a BS in biological systems engineering from the University of California Davis in 2017, Randall worked as a process engineer on development-related projects in Brazil. Her experiences, paired with her position at DWR, instilled a passion for improving water quality in water-scarce and low-income regions.

“It is an honor to receive the WateReuse Association Colorado Student Scholarship,” Randall said. “I would like to thank the WateReuse Association, and my community at CU �鶹ӰԺ, for supporting my research pursuits as a young professional in the water sector.”

The WateReuse Association is the nation’s only trade association dedicated to advancing laws, policy, funding and public acceptance of recycled water. Their membership is made up of water utilities, business, government agencies and not-for-profit organizations dedicated to recycling water to ensure the safety of communities.
