Alumni - Spring 2022 ENVS Alumni Newsletter

Snowy Flatirons

Dear ENVS Alumni,

I hope this finds you well. We’re halfway through the 2022 Spring Semester here in the Department of Environmental Studies (ENVS) at CU Â鶹ӰԺ. You may recall the intermittent signs of spring approaching when you were here in Â鶹ӰԺ: some days in the 60sF with birds chirping (hints of spring), then some days of heavy snow and bitter cold (remnants of winter) …repeat, repeat, repeat. That’s been March for us again this year. That’s the Â鶹ӰԺ we love.

Since our last newsletter in Fall 2021, there have been many continued successes (which you can find in this newsletter, on our website, and communicated through Twitter and Instagram) as we seek to more capably train future leaders, scholars, and practitioners to address 21st century environmental challenges.

Among them, at the beginning of March we hosted Professor from the University of Michigan for a set of student and faculty visits, class guest lectures, and an inaugural distinguished lecture of the Patricia Sheffels Visiting Scholar Keynote series. You’ll learn more about Patricia Sheffels and her family in a feature that follows in this newsletter. It was a wildly successful visit, culminating in an enlightening talk entitled ‘Against Crisis Science: Research Futures for Climate and Energy Justice’ with over 100 people in attendance at the CU Â鶹ӰԺ Museum of Natural History. We are so pleased to have begun this meaningful partnership with Patricia Sheffels and her family, and already look forward to next Spring’s event.

I’m also happy to share that our CU Â鶹ӰԺ ENVS commencement is coming up Friday, May 6 at 1-4pm on the CU Â鶹ӰԺ campus in a big tent outside at the Jennie Smoly Caruthers Biotechnology Building’s West Lawn (3415 Colorado Avenue). ENVS will host a reception there immediately preceding the ceremony. We’ll be celebrating the accomplishments of about 160ÌýENVS undergrad majors graduates, 45 Professional Master's graduates, and 5Ìýresearch Master's and PhD graduates. Our commencement speaker is who is CEO and co-founder of Inclusive Journeys, and founder of Ecoinclusive Strategies. If you’re in Â鶹ӰԺ, please join us and be sure to say hello.

We continue our work to better connect with you as ENVS Alumni. If you’re not yet in touch but want to learn more about our ongoing work, or have suggestions on how to improve our communications with the greater ENVS community, you can email me at boykoff@colorado.edu to start a conversation. Also, find us on Twitter at @CUÂ鶹ӰԺENVS and on Instagram at ENVS_CU_Â鶹ӰԺ to learn of ongoing work of our ENVS faculty, alumni, staff, and students.

Warm regards,

Max Boykoff
