On Friday, Oct. 7, the Â鶹ӰԺ will host the Future Teacher Expo for more than 200 high school students interested in life as a teacher education student and K-12 teacher.

The 14th annual event features teacher education programs at universities and colleges from across Colorado, but this is the first time the expo, held at two locations each fall, will be hosted on the CU Â鶹ӰԺ campus. The University of Colorado Colorado Springs campus will also host a similar event on Oct. 14.

The expo begins with a welcome from the CU Â鶹ӰԺ School of Education Dean Kathy Schultz and a keynote address from 2016 Colorado Teacher of the Year Leticia Ingram. Future teachers will rotate through a college fair featuring 18 teacher education programs, a game room where they will learn about the admissions process, and Q&As with a current students and faculty.

Beginning in 2017-18, future teachers will have two new degree options for pursuing transformative careers in education at the CU Â鶹ӰԺ School of Education — the Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education and the Bachelor of Arts in Leadership and Community Engagement.

The new majors were strategically designed to offer desirable new pathways for students interested in serving high-needs communities and working with youth. CU Â鶹ӰԺ teacher candidates will earn their elementary education degree in conjunction with the Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Education Endorsement. As Colorado and the nation continue to face teacher shortages, this degree provides future teachers with tools for examining the social foundations of education and working with diverse populations.

Students interested in secondary education or combining a CU Â鶹ӰԺ degree in another area with teacher licensure can enroll in the CU Â鶹ӰԺ teacher licensure program.
