sj Miller, associate professor of literacy studies, has been selected for an international project hosted by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development (MGIEP).
The ambitious project aims to integrate education for peace, sustainable development, and global citizenship into curriculum and textbooks, and it involves academics and researchers from all over the world. The notion of ‘embedding’ refers to activities to integrate normative concepts of peace and sustainable development (e.g., multiculturalism, social justice) into mainstream subjects such as math, science, social science, and languages.
Miller is one of 16 international scholars and will contribute to the English language arts sector. Miller was selected based on his policy and pedagogical work integrating social justice into English education standards. Miller helped draft the National Council of Teachers of English’s about social justice in English education and its , which informed the first standard in the United States that advances social justice work in teacher preparation, the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation’s Social Justice Standard VI.
Currently, Miller is involved in a series of UNESCO-MGIEP webinars with international collaborators leading up to a June workshop in Bangalore, India. Ultimately, the longitudinal project intends to: develop a guidebook on embedding education for peace curriculum in text books with subject specific chapters, design a training program for text book writers, and host regional and national training workshops in pilot countries.Â
