Bachelor of Science in Electrical & Computer Engineering
Prepare to bring innovation to technology.
Like electrical engineering, a degree in electrical and computer engineering gives you the opportunity to work as a design, production, testing, consulting, research, teaching, or management professional in a wide variety of careers in the computer industry, embedded systems, wireless communications, the power and renewable energy industry, the biomedical industry, aerospace and academia. Some graduates also go on to careers in professions like law and medicine.
Examples of career opportunities include the development of new cybersecurity methods for computer networks; design of virtual and augmented reality systems; production and quality control of semiconductors and microprocessors; and higher education teaching or research.
Curriculum & Requirements
Required courses in engineering, physical science, and mathematics are interwoven throughout the curriculum to provide a balanced education in the fundamentals of electrical and computer engineering. In addition to electrical engineering core courses, you’ll take courses in computer programming and upper-division software electives. These are complemented by technical electives,, free electives, and a , for a total of 128 credits required for the degree.
Senior Design
During the two-semester Senior Design Lab, you willÌýform teamsÌýand follow an industrial-type process to propose, design, build and document yourÌýprojects. You will make formal presentations at a Preliminary Design Review in the first semester and a Critical Design Review in the second semester, before showing off your finished project at the college's Engineering Projects Expo.Ìý
The expo is widely attended by faculty, students and parents. In addition, many local company representatives and the ECEE Industrial Advisory Board members attend the expo, giving you a chance to network with professional engineers. Teams demonstrate projects and discuss the design work that went into the finished product.
Learning Goals & Outcomes
Upon graduation, students will be able to:
- Identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science and mathematicsÌý
- Apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental and economic factors
- Communicate effectively with a range of audiences
- Recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental and societal contexts
- Function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks and meet objectives
- Develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions
- Acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies
