The Conference on World Affairs is pleased to announce its programming executive team for the 2021-22 conference year. Laurie Leinonen will continue as CWA Program Committee Chair, working in partnership with Alex Pham, CWA Student Program Chair. The Board created the Student Program Chair position last year in an effort to further enhance student voices in curating the conference.

Betsy Block will serve as the Community Program Vice Chair, supporting the programming leadership. Robin Luff will take over the role of CWA Community Outreach Chair and her appointment will also hold a seat on the CWA board.

Laurie Leinonen is a 40 years+ resident of �鶹ӰԺ where her two children were born and raised. Having attended CWA for years, she became involved directly as a volunteer with CWA in 2014 when she joined the Arts Committee, later becoming its Co-Chair from 2016-2019. Her interest in volunteering for CWA has always been about reaching a more diverse community and student population. Laurie focuses on how best we can keep CWA thriving and engaging, whatever the current issues may be.
Alexander Pham is a sophomore at the �鶹ӰԺ pursuing a degree in Chemical and Biological Engineering, and serves as a member of the Global Engineering Program. Pham is currently the CWA Student Program Chair for the 2021-22 conference year. Apart from CWA, Pham also works in research in HIV vaccination, advocates for improved access to healthcare, and is a volunteer with Children's Hospital Colorado.
Betsy Block - After retiring in 2013 from a career in women's health, Betsy attended her first CWA. Entralled with the experience, she decided to volunteer. She was warmly welcomed by the Human condition sub-committee and became a co-chair two years later. During the past six years she has loved meeting and working with students and community members, searching for the finest speakers and creating innovative and stimulating panels. She looks forward to meeting new challenges and continuing CWA's tradition of excellence. When not working on CWA, Betsy is passionate about watching and playing tennis, cycling, opera and being with her family, including her two granddaughters.
Robin Luff is an Advisory Board member for Watson Institute and is CWA Community Outreach Chair for the Conference on World Affairs. Professionally, Robin had a long career in publishing, working with magazines that focused on sports or health. Robin has also worked in post-conflict countries with programming in Early Childhood Education with a Respecting Differences Curriculum. Over the years, she has served on the board of Impact on Education, Summit Charter School, The Community Foundation, The School Food Project and El Centro Amistad. She worked with Community of Sudanese and American women and hosted Sudanese Refugee, Mary Ingiria, who lived with Robin’s family as Mary she finished her degree at CU. Her team is Kevin, Kerrick and Aidan Luff.

Other new CWA board members are as follows:

Elise Miller (Community Seat) - Originally from San Francisco, Elise Miller has been a �鶹ӰԺ resident for over 30 years. She is a University of Colorado, �鶹ӰԺ alumna with a BA in Psychology. She worked in business development, sales and marketing for over 20 years, served as Chair of the Board of Jarrow Montessori, on the Executive Committee for the Parent Council and on the Development Committee at Alexander Dawson School. Elise has been involved in CWA in various capacities, including on the Development Committee, Chair of Keynote Committee and a member of the Business Committee. She is currently pursuing her JD at the University of Denver, Sturm College of Law.
Benjamin Teitelbaum (Faculty Seat) - Benjamin R. Teitelbaum is Assistant Professor of Ethnomusicology and International Affairs. He earned a Ph.D. from Brown University with auxiliary studies at the Royal College of Music, Stockholm and Harvard University, and a B.M., summa cum lade, in nyckelharpa performance from Bethany College. Prior to coming to the College of Music, he was Instructor and Head of Nordic Studies, also at the �鶹ӰԺ.
Yvette Lowney (Community Seat) - Yvette Wieder Lowney is a �鶹ӰԺ native and second generation CWA volunteer. After returning to �鶹ӰԺ in 1989, she re-engaged with CWA, subsequently volunteering as her parenting and professional schedules allowed. Over the last decade, she has volunteered with CWA in many capacities, and now looks forward to bringing that background to her participation on the Board.

The Conference on World Affairs is pleased to announce its programming executive team for the 2020-21 conference year. Laurie Leinonen has been elected to serve as CWA Program Committee Chair, working in partnership with Lauren Daniels, our first-ever Student Program Chair. The Board created the Student Program Chair position several months ago in an effort to further enhance student voices in curating the conference.

Robin Luff will serve as the Community Program Vice Chair, and William Romano as the Student Program Vice Chair, supporting Laurie and Lauren’s programming leadership.

Lauren Daniels is a Junior CU �鶹ӰԺ studying Aerospace Engineering. She began volunteering for the conference in 2018, and has been a Student Chair for both the Science & Technology Committee and the Health Committee, in addition to volunteering as a producer, ambassador, and driver during the conference. Lauren has previous leadership experience through her role as President of the CU Club Fencing team.

William Romano is currently a Senior studying Political Science and International Affairs. He has been a member of CWA Student Committee, Co-chair of CWA Politics and Media and International Affairs. Along with CWA, he is a cadet at Detachment 105 in Air Force ROTC. He is currently a part of the CU Political Science Club and Pi Sigma Alpha.

Laurie Leinonen will also serve on the CWA Board, along with new member and CU student, Anya Berlova. For the 2021-22 term, Leslie Durgin serves as the Chair of the CWA Board and Alison Cool serves as board vice chair.

Anya Berlova is a senior majoring in finance at the Leeds School of Business, and is a member of the Leeds Scholars. As a freshman, Anya joined the Conference on World Affairs as the Student Chair of the Arts Committee, and has had an active role in the conference ever since. Outside of CWA, Anya is an anti-bullying activist, published children's book illustrator, and founder of a social startup.

Margaret Hollingsworth and Laurie Hathorn

The 2019 CWA Community Chair term has begun and the responsibilities of the role will be shared between Margaret Hollingsworth (who will serve as CWA Program committee Chair/Community Vice-Chair) and Laurie Hathorn (serving as CWA Community Chair, previously CWA Community Vice-Chair). They will oversee the CWA Program committee and assist with conference planning.

Dr. Hollingsworth first joined CWA as a member of the Science and Tech committee in 2016. Prior to retiring in 2016, she was a faculty member in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University at Buffalo. In 2017, she served as a Community Co-Chair on the CWA Science and Tech committee and was a member of the Producer committee for CWA's 70th conference in 2018. Dr. Hollingsworth serves as a volunteer in several other organizations in �鶹ӰԺ County, including 500 Women Scientists and Reading to End Racism.

Hathorn began volunteering with the conference in 2015, serving on the Business and Arts subcommittees, the Housing committee, and currently serves as a member of the Business Planning committee. She is a former entrepreneur with businesses in New York City and now resides in �鶹ӰԺ spending her time supporting and volunteering with local organizations. Hathorn is a mentor for CU �鶹ӰԺ students in the Leeds School of Business and is establishing an endowment for flute student success at the CU �鶹ӰԺ College of Music.

“I’d first like to thank Betsy Hand for her generous, creative, dedicated, and very successful two years of service as CWA Community Chair," said John Griffin, CWA Faculty Director. "She did a wonderful job, and I’m so pleased that she will remain involved on the CWA Arts committee, one of our 2019 Theme committees, and on our Fundraising committee."

"Next, I want to warmly welcome Margaret and Laurie to their new roles. I very much look forward to working in partnership with them over the coming year and have every confidence given their combined experience and talents that they will be tremendously successful in their roles.”

Hathorn will also serve on the CWA Board, along with new members Emily Volk (CU student and CWA Arts committee Student Chair), Bruce Fredrickson (CWA Business Committee Co-Chair), and Shelly Miller (CU �鶹ӰԺ faculty member in the School of Engineering).

Laurie Hathorn has been elected by the Conference on World Affairs Program Committee chairs to serve as Community Vice-Chair for the 2017-18 academic year. The Vice-Chair assists the Community Chair with CWA Program Committee oversight and conference planning.

"I am so pleased to welcome Laurie as CWA Community Vice-Chair," said Betsy Hand, CWA Community Chair. "She brings valuable professional experience to the team as a former business owner, and is a wise and logical thinker with a big picture perspective. She is a wonderful new voice for the CWA!"

Echoing Hand's statement, CWA Faculty Director John Griffin said, "We are thrilled to have lined up in Laurie a very deserving successor to Betsy as Community and Program Chair; she brings a wealth of experience and enthusiasm to the role."

CWA Vice Community Chair Betsy Hand has been elected by the CWA Program Committee to serve as Community Chair for the 2016-17 academic year after long-time CWA friend and volunteer, Stephanie Rudy stepped down from the position. Hand is a long-time volunteer for the conference, including helping to lead the CWA Arts subcommittee. Hand has formerly served as the Executive Director of an Arts Center in Connecticut, President of an all-volunteer city League of Women Voters, and as the previous Director of Public Affairs for the Seaport Museum in New York City. Rudy will continue to serve on the CWA Politics & Media subcommittee and as Co-Chair of the CWA Housing committee.

"It is impossible to thank Stephanie enough for her dedicated and outstanding service to the Conference on World Affairs as our Community Chair," said CWA Faculty Director, John Griffin. "She has made a tremendous impact on our community, our speakers, and especially the students for whom she worked tirelessly to enrich the CWA experience. We look forward to her continued involvement with the Conference in years to come."
