The Conference on World Affairs (CWA) is excited to announce our partnership with the CU �鶹ӰԺ Climate Innovation Collaboratory and the CU �鶹ӰԺ Research & Innovation Office. This partnership provides CWA with support to be able to continue offering free events open to the public, provide student leadership stipends and internships, cover production costs, and speaker-related expenses.

Also, aligning with our focus on climate this year, the Climate Innovation Collaboratory (CIC) is a nationally competitive, convening body that enables climate action with global, real-world impact through technology and market development.

Deloitte and the �鶹ӰԺ launched the Climate Innovation Collaboratory to translate cutting-edge climate research and data into meaningful climate solutions for businesses, organizations, government agencies and communities.

While our researchers, faculty and staff lead the charge, this transformational work includes increasing collaborations with undergraduate and graduate students, postdocs, entrepreneurs, and government and industry partners.

Continuing Education Sponsors CWA Livestream for Seventh Consecutive Year

The CU �鶹ӰԺ Division of Continuing Education continues its partnership with the Conference on World Affairs (CWA) for the seventh consecutive year to livestream major conference sessions to audiences in �鶹ӰԺ and beyond. As we celebrate another year of committed partnership, CWA is grateful to the Division of Continuing Education for their continued support of the conference's efforts to share CWA's important conversations on today's pressing issues with a worldwide audience.

This year's CWA week (April 12-14) will livestream all sessions via the CWA website: www.colorado.edu/cwa. Livestreaming services are provided by the CU �鶹ӰԺ OIT department and the Conference on World Affairs.

Throughout its history the CU �鶹ӰԺ Division of Continuing Education has utilized innovative technologies to extend educational opportunities to students beyond the CU �鶹ӰԺ campus.

The Division of Continuing Education

Continuing Education has pioneered new technologies in service to education for over 100 years. They offer online and evening classes, noncredit programming, degree and certificate programs, K-12 science education outreach, and intensive English programs.

The �鶹ӰԺ Conference on World Affairs returns in person with most sessions livestreamed online April 6-9, 2022. One hundred diverse speakers and performers will participate in 125 panel discussions, performances and keynote events on the CU �鶹ӰԺ campus. All events are free and open to the public; schedule will be available in mid-March.

The event will feature dialogue on a variety of topics including this year’s conference themes: art as activism; stories from the real world; the Constitution; racism in the United States; regenerative agriculture; and the entrepreneurial journey.

Notable events include keynote presentations by:

Victoria Garrick, mental health advocate, podcast host, and former Division I athlete
Steven Olikara, founder & president of Millennial Action Project and candidate for United States Senate in Wisconsin
Thomas Chatterton Williams, author, contributing writer at New York Times Magazine, and visiting fellow at the American Enterprise Institute
Akhil Amar, Author and Sterling Professor of Law and Political Science, Yale University

To provide a safe, high-quality event experience and anticipate venue capacity needs, CWA attendees are asked to register in advance via the CWA website. Conference registration is not required, but encouraged. CU students are not required to register in advance and will receive priority seating. On-site registration will be available at the University Memorial Center (UMC) between 8-5 p.m. Wednesday, April 6 through Saturday, April 9.

After a successful interactive virtual event in 2021, Ebert Interruptus returns as an in-person event to Macky Auditorium for the 2022 Conference on World Affairs.

A beloved tradition of the conference, Ebert Interruptus is a four-part event showcasing a film along with in-depth analysis with the host. Film critic and author Josh Larsen returns to host the 2022 event showcasing this year's feature: Jaws, the 1975 American thriller directed by Steven Spielberg, based on the 1974 novel by Peter Benchley.

CWA student volunteer coordinator Joe Kennedy interviewed Larsen about this year's event:

We’re excited that Interruptus is returning in person this year. What are you looking forward to the most about this year’s event?

First and foremost, I'm excited to be back at CWA in person, watching our movie on the big screen at Macky with a live, interactive audience. With the help of Jamie Krutz, CWA Program Committee Film Chair, and Cooper Braun-Enos, CWA virtual support specialist, we were able to pull off a successful virtual version of Ebert Interruptus last year. And while it was good to be able to continue the tradition, there's nothing like being on campus, as part of the larger conference, doing Interruptus in person.

This is the first year a Spielberg film has been featured at Interruptus. There are so many classic Spielberg films. Why did you choose Jaws for this year’s Interruptus?

I was a bit shocked to realize that Spielberg had never been covered at Interruptus, and delighted that it gave us the excuse to choose one of his films. He's not only one of my favorite filmmakers, but also the sort of meticulous, inspired director whose work is perfect for "interrupting," frame by frame, in order to analyze the creative choices that were made. Jaws is not only one of his best films, but also one of his most thrilling, with a rich political subtext.

Jaws is a blockbuster. What is Jaws’ impact on the film industry as a whole?

Along with George Lucas' Star Wars, Spielberg's Jaws is often cited (blamed) as one of the blockbusters that steered studios away from the personal, idiosyncratic films of the 1970s and helped to usher in the cinema of the 1980s, with a focus on corporate, mass-audience spectacles and their sequels. There's truth to that, but it doesn't take away from the fact that Jaws is a masterpiece in its own right - just one that was a massive hit with audiences as well.

Interruptus events begin at 3 p.m. daily April 6-9, 2022 in Macky Auditorium on the CU �鶹ӰԺ campus. The first event is a full screening of the film, followed by three in-depth analysis sessions with the host.

CWA Offers One-Credit Leadership Course for the Spring 2022 Semester

The Conference on World Affairs and the Center for Leadership have partnered to offer a one-credit course for participation and involvement with Conference on World Affairs event this upcoming Spring 2022 semester.

Students will be mentored in developing their CWA learning plan, they will generate a summary of how the experience advanced their leadership knowledge, and they will synthesize how lessons learned from this experience will be applied into their own leadership development moving forward.

Thanks to all who joined us for the annual John and Katherine Rosenbloom Endowed Symposium for the Exploration of Ideas on Tuesday, October 26. This interdisciplinary conversation addressed the State of Equality in 2021.

Dean Lolita Buckner Inniss of the University of Colorado Law School moderated a discussion by scholars of law, philosophy, and politics on these questions and more.

The John and Katherine Rosenbloom Endowed Symposium for the Exploration of Ideas was established in 2016 to support engaging interdisciplinary, relevant, and thoughtful discussions on important issues in honor of former Colorado Law Dean Phil Weiser and the lectures he implemented during his deanship. Presented as a partnership between the University of Colorado Law School and the �鶹ӰԺ Conference on World Affairs.

In the past two years, many things have been put on pause. The global pandemic has shut down schools, workplaces, and most in-person gatherings. The pandemic essentially caused the nation to halt, and in many ways has interrupted the path towards equality in this country. However, things are slowly beginning to open back up - in-person events are now safe to participate in, and it is now time to continue discussions that may have been muffled out. The Rosenbloom Endowed Symposium for the Exploration of Ideas is being held in-person this year, moderating an interdisciplinary discussion on the state of equality in 2021.

The Rosenbloom Endowed Symposium for the Exploration of Ideas is an annual event hosted by the Conference for World Affairs (CWA) and the CU Law School. Together, they put on a speaker series to discuss various topics related to law, political science, ethics, and many other disciplines. This year, selected speakers from across the country will be discussing the state of equality in 2021, moderated by the CU Law School's new Dean, Lolita Buckner Innis. The Symposium will be held on October 26 at 4:00 p.m. in the Wittemeyer Courtroom in the Wolf Law Building on CU �鶹ӰԺ’s campus and also livestreamed on the CU Law YouTube channel.

The CWA is a 70-year-old campus organization that is best known for its week-long event that is hosted in April, but also hosts events throughout the year. Katherine and John Rosenbloom are supporters of the University of Colorado, and John Rosenbloom is a CU Law School Alum. The Rosenblooms established the Symposium in honor of former CU Law School Dean Phillip Weiser, who now serves as the Attorney General of Colorado. The Rosenblooms and the CWA have worked together on the Symposium for the past four years.

“It has been a good partnership,” said Katherine Rosenbloom. The Symposium and the CWA have worked together to expand discussions from beyond just topics of law.

“The law school and CWA have been able to expand the scope of the topics so that it is now interdisciplinary, and I think that the CWA has allowed for greater breadth in terms of critically looking at important issues and bringing different disciplines to the discussion,” said John Rosenbloom. The partnership has been beneficial to the CWA as well, as it allows them to hold more events throughout the year.

“Holding events like the Rosenbloom Symposium allows us to speak more immediately and frequently to the many issues confronting the country and the world,” said John Griffin, CWA Faculty Director.

This is an especially important event for the CWA, as it is their first in-person event since 2019. Masks will be required indoors, as per �鶹ӰԺ County and CU �鶹ӰԺ requirements, but the event will be free and open to students, faculty, and community members alike.

“After hosting events excusively online, we're excited for students to get to be back in a courtroom hearing from scholars,” said Erin Rain, the Assistant Director of Marketing and Media Relations for the CWA.

The topic, the state of equality in 2021, is one that the Symposium felt would be especially important in our political and social climate. As we emerge from the pandemic, this sort of discussion is especially important.

“There is such division in our country that has taken place in the past few years, and lots of things have been put on hold as far as civil rights, equal rights, women's rights,” said Katherine Rosenbloom.

Three different speakers from across the country will be attending, representing several different departments. The speakers include Adam Omar Hosein; a Fellow-in-Residence at the Department of Ethics at Harvard University, Reva Siegel; a Professor of Law at Yale Law School, and James Lindley Wilson; Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Chicago. The discussion will be moderated by Lolita Buckner Innis, CU Law School’s first Black female Dean. The diverse backgrounds and academic concentrations of the speakers will make for an integrated discussion on the state of equality in our country today.

“I think that equality is an idea that is easy to mention, it is easy to articulate, but not everybody has the same understanding of what it means in terms of our day to day lives and our laws,” said John Rosenbloom, “The symposium was brought together with the idea that different aspects of the idea of equality would be explored with different realms of philosophy, politics, morality and real-world examples.”

A distinguished writer and dedicated scholar, Dr. Brown is the author of Amateur Hour: Presidential Character and the Question of Leadership.

The centerpiece of Dr. Brown's book is the focus on our understanding—from the time of Washington, through Lincoln, to the contemporary period—of the role that character should play, but often has not, of late, in terms of the person elected to the White House and how they conduct themselves in the office and as a leader. Brown’s analysis interrogates the scholarship around the concept of presidential psychology and leadership, while unpacking the connections between leadership in this complicated elected office and how we have, more recently, elected presidents who are often lacking in experience, and why this is problematic.

Inspired by The New York Times Modern Love, which includes a weekly column, a book, a podcast and film series — about relationships, feelings, betrayals and revelations, the Conference on World Affairs (CWA) human condition program committee shares University of Colorado student stories of modern love through a series of performances and a virtual discussion during the 2021 CWA week (April 5-11).

All essays were all authored by University of Colorado students and were performed and recorded by University of Colorado Theatre & Dance students. Each day of the conference CWA will share a new performance via the CWA YouTube channel. The series will conclude with a facilitated virtual discussion between select authors and long-time CWA speaker, CU alumnus, author and social scientist, Ty Tashiro to discuss the challenges, triumphs and shared experiences of their stories.
