Dan has led communications strategy at the highest levels of government and advised leaders in politics, the private sector and civil society on some of the most challenging policy and reputational issues of our time. He most recently served as the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs during the Biden Administration, driving the communications strategy on topics including border security and immigration policy, foreign and domestic terrorism, major cybersecurity incidents, federal disaster response, congressional oversight and other matters impacting the Department’s 260,000-strong workforce.
Dan joined DHS from the public affairs consultancy FGS Global, formerly the Glover Park Group, where he was a partner. For five years, Dan advised high-profile clients, including Fortune 10 technology companies and some of the largest financial institutions, on front-page news issues, providing counsel on strategic communications, public affairs, crisis management and public policy advocacy.
For five years prior, Dan served in senior positions in the Obama Administration, including as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs at the U.S. Department of Treasury where he spearheaded communications on major financial, fiscal and economic policy issues, and as the spokesperson for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) managing communications on the response to more than 200 federally declared disasters, including Hurricane Sandy in 2012. Dan also worked in Congress for three years for former U.S. Senator Tom Udall and started his career organizing the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver and working on then-Senator Obama's first presidential campaign.
Dan regularly appears in national media to provide commentary and insight. Originally from England, Dan grew up in Denver, Colorado and graduated from the University of Colorado, Â鶹ӰԺ, with degrees in International Affairs, Economics and Journalism. Dan lives in Washington, D.C. with his wife, Abbey.
