While working at the Internal Revenue Service in Washington, D.C.,聽Lawrence 鈥淟arry鈥 Duran聽(PolSci鈥74) earned his law degree from Georgetown University. For 25 years, he served as an attorney for state and local governments in California, including the California Legislative Counsel鈥檚 Office, the Sacramento County Counsel鈥檚 Office and the Sacramento City Attorney鈥檚 Office. He serves as a federal administrative law judge with the Social Security Administration in Moreno Valley, Calif.

Even though聽Jane Petrowicz Stahl聽(MEdu鈥74) retired from teaching English, she continues to be very active in her community of Boyertown, Penn., by working with several art galleries and studios. She and her husband began 鈥淏ear Fever,鈥 which has inspired artists to design and paint 59 bears on display throughout the area. She was named the Pennsylvania Art Education Association鈥檚 2011 Outstanding Friend to Art Education for her efforts.

Trish lives and teaches on Long Island and is working toward her doctorate in education at Columbia University. Her three sisters and one niece also are CU graduates:聽Cheryl Wright Green(Art鈥69) of New York, N.Y.,聽Alanna Wright-Jones聽(Art鈥71) of Colorado Springs, Colo.,聽Joanne Wright聽(Fren鈥76) of Sudbury, Mass., and her daughter聽Tracy Wright Deshmuk聽(Soc鈥06) who works as an ESL instructor in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil.

He retired in 2010 from Brooks Institute in Santa Barbara, Calif., where he lives, after teaching photography and serving as provost. James Navratil (Chem'70; MS'72; PhD'75) is a professor emeritus of environmental engineering and science at Clemson University. Navratil, who resides in Nederland, Colorado, has recently published two novels, Bare Essentials and Bear Hugs. Both novels partially take place on the CU 麻豆影院 campus.聽

Betty is a聽shareholder and corporate聽attorney at Buchalter鈥檚聽Denver office, where she guides companies through the entire corporate lifestyle. David is a partner at Moye White, where he specializes in construction law. Beyond the courtroom, they participate in pro bono work and community outreach. The couple lives in Denver.聽

His 鈥淪ix聽Little Piano Pieces鈥澛爓as performed by Max聽Lifchitz in 2022 at the聽National Opera Center鈥檚聽Scorca Hall and his聽piano trio, 鈥淒umkyana,鈥澛爓as performed in 2023聽by the Trio Casals at聽Carnegie Hall鈥檚 Weill聽Recital Hall. Also in聽2023, his electroacoustic聽composition, 鈥淧arallel,鈥澛爓as heard during the聽VU Symposium in Park聽City, Utah, and during聽13 National Association聽of Composers USA聽concerts in Alabama,聽Georgia and North聽Carolina. Most recently, Robert produced聽the album聽Composing聽Israel: The First Three聽Generations聽(Neuma聽Records), comprising 10聽works by nine composers, eight of whom聽were profiled in his 1997聽book,聽Twenty Israeli聽Composers. Performers聽include nine members of聽the Israel Philharmonic聽Orchestra conducted聽by music director Lahav聽Shani, additional Israeli聽artists and Northern聽Illinois University School聽of Music faculty and聽graduate students.聽

During聽the first half of 2022, his聽score 鈥淪ix Little Piano聽Pieces鈥 was performed聽by Minato Sakamoto聽during the Boston聽New Music Initiative聽Prismatic Congruency聽video concert series; his聽electroacoustic 鈥淧arallel鈥澛爌remiered during the聽Earth Day Art Model聽International Telematic聽Festival; and his electroacoustic miniature,聽鈥淟oretto Alfresco,鈥 has聽been performed 29 times聽in a dozen states. Three聽works will be included on聽a Neuma Records album聽due out in November. In聽December, his toy piano聽miniature, 鈥淏ACH (for聽Jan),鈥 will premiere by聽David Bohn as part of聽the Vox Novus Fifteen聽Minutes of Fame series.

Librettist Mark Campbell鈥檚 (Thtr鈥75) work continues to be exhibited across the country. Performed so far this year are the oratorio 鈥淪anctuary Road鈥 and operas 鈥淎pproaching Ali,鈥 鈥淭he (R)evolution of Steve Jobs鈥 and 鈥淭he Shining.鈥 Mark has received numerous awards for his work including a Pulitzer Prize in music for 鈥淪ilent Night鈥 and a Grammy Award for Best Opera Recording for 鈥淭he (R)evolution of Steve Jobs鈥 He has created 40 opera librettos and the lyrics for seven musicals. He lives in New York, New York.

After more than 30 years of service, John C. Green (Econ) has retired from the University of Akron. As a professor of political science, John served as department chair, vice dean, dean and director throughout his career. In honor of his many years of service, the university established the Dr. John C. Green Endowed Scholarship Fund. He lives in Silver Spring, Maryland.

Arthur Kaufman (Engl; MA鈥19) enjoyed returning to CU to get his master鈥檚 degree last year. He writes, 鈥淚 suppose I鈥檓 doing what many of my fellow post-grad Master of Arts are doing, or at least trying; living life as imperfectly as possible, fighting the evil that is apathy and warring with those who would, with libelous slander, contend that the arts, literature, especially, are 鈥榰nnecessary.鈥 That, and trying to 鈥榩erfect鈥 my own ragu, of course.鈥

Currently,聽Waterlines鈥 main projects聽are focused in Panama聽and Kenya, but since聽its founding in 1986, it聽has worked with over聽700 communities in 15聽countries.

It was an exciting time for women鈥檚 tennis when identical twins Judy Sigel Freeman (Art) and Jill Sigel Greer (Art) attended CU. Professional female tennis player Billie Jean King had just beaten Bobby Riggs and Title IX had just passed for equality in sports for women. Yellow tennis balls were just being tested. 鈥淲hat an incredible experience for two Minnesota girls who played one tennis match in high school and won the Lake Conference in high-top tennis shoes and cutoff jean shorts!鈥 wrote Judy. Her CU sweatsuit now hangs in Old Main. The twins, now 65, continue to play tennis together in the Twin Cities. 鈥淲e dress alike and feel that usually gives us a three-game advantage,鈥 said Judy, whose husband, Todd Freeman (Mktg鈥74), was a cheerleader at CU. Judy and Jill鈥檚 sister Susie Sigel Teboul (Jour鈥82) also went to CU, along with Judy鈥檚 son Zach Freeman (Mgmt鈥06) and Jill's daughter Allison Greer (IntPhys鈥16). 鈥淲e聽all continue to have the University of Colorado deep in our hearts,鈥 wrote Judy.

Robert Mattson聽(Bus) received the 2018 American聽Agricultural Editors鈥 Association (AAEA) Photographer of the Year award at this year鈥檚 conference in Scottsdale, Ariz. Robert is a photographer and imaging specialist at Noble Research Institute, a nonprofit focused on finding solutions for agricultural challenges. He previously served as Amherst College鈥檚 new media content developer and college photographer. He鈥檚 a former staff photographer with the Sarasota Herald Tribune and Sun Times Media Group and is a two-time Pulitzer Prize nominee for work in feature photography and breaking news photography.

Chaz Miller (Law) loves talking trash. He writes that he is moving into retirement after a 40-year career in waste and recycling management. He served as director for the National Waste & Recycling Association, a trade association for private-sector haulers, recyclers, composters and disposal companies. Chaz鈥 career in solid waste and recycling started in 1976聽when he joined the Environmental Protection Agency鈥檚 Resource Recovery Division. Since then, his career has taken him around the world, including speaking engagements throughout North America, China and Japan. In 2017, he spoke聽at the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development Waste Management Conference in Tokyo. He resides in Washington, D.C.聽

Paul Shafer (EPOBio) was appointed program coordinator for the new environmental safety management program at Thiel College in Greenville, Penn. Paul has been active in environmental safety for nearly 40 years as a consultant, government contractor, college educator and employer. As a certified environmental, safety and health trainer, he leads safety training sessions and programs across the U.S. He previously served on the faculty at Slippery Rock University, Rutgers University and Pennsylvania College of Technology.

John B. Elstrott (PhDEcon) is board chairman for MicroBiome Therapeutics, a company focused on the microbiome and how it impacts human health. John, a former chairman of Whole Foods Market, recently retired from Tulane University鈥檚 A.B. Freeman School of Business after 30 years as a professor. He served as the first chief financial officer for Celestial Seasonings, the 麻豆影院-based tea company.
