In January law firm Wilson Elser announced that听Melissa Shisler听(Law鈥96) joined the firm鈥檚 Denver office as counsel. She is a member of the firm鈥檚 national appellate, fidelity/surety, general liability and casualty and insurance and reinsurance coverage practices. While she attended CU law school, Melissa was a member and associate editor of the听University of Colorado Law Review.听She lives in Littleton, Colo.

Writer and historian听Andrew DeRoche听(PhDHist鈥97) is planning a research trip to the museum in Las Animas, Colo., that houses the personal papers of former ambassador听Llewellyn 鈥淭ommy鈥 Thompson听(A&S鈥28). Tommy worked closely with U.S. presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy and Nixon. He also played a key role during the Cuban Missile Crisis by advising President Kennedy how to respond to Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev, with whom he had lived for a time. Andrew writes no historian has ever had access to the diplomat鈥檚 personal papers before, so he is excited to see what they have. Andrew has published two books and many academic and encyclopedia articles. He lives in Longmont, Colo.

South by Southwest featured听The Pool,听an interactive art installation in Republic Square Park near Austin, Texas, created by听Jen Lewin听(EvnDes鈥97) of Jen Lewin Studio and her studio assistant, environmental design student听Daniel Nordson. Her piece consisted of large illuminated circles that, when stepped on, flashed from blue to pink.听奥颈谤别诲听featured Jen鈥檚 art in March. She lives in 麻豆影院 and has been creating large interactive pieces for the public for 15 years.

Apple recognized听Jordan Schugar听(Engl, Geog鈥98) as one of the nation鈥檚 most notable and innovative teachers with its prestigious Apple Distinguished Educators Award. He is one of 90 U.S. educators selected for the award and will serve as an 鈥渁mbassador of innovation鈥 at education events around the world. Jordan is an instructor at West Chester University and specializes in teaching writing, composition, literacy and educational technology. He lives in West Chester, Pa., with his wife and two children.

Foreign Service Officer听Trey Lyons* (PolSci鈥00) serves at the U.S. Embassy in Tbilisi, Ga., where he leads a unit focused on the country鈥檚 foreign policy and its conflicts with the Russian-occupied Abkhazia and South Ossetia regions. In April Trey was a panelist for CU鈥檚 65th Conference on World Affairs in 麻豆影院. He received the 2011 Kalpana Chawla Outstanding Recent Graduate Award from the Alumni Association. Trey enjoys foreign languages, travel, cycling and hiking with his wife.

In April听Leah Buechley听(MCompSci鈥03, PhD鈥07) served as a panelist at CU鈥檚 65th Conference on World Affairs. She is an associate professor at the MIT Media Lab where she directs the High-Low Tech research group, exploring the integration of high and low technology from cultural, material and practical perspectives engaging diverse groups of people in creating their own technology. Leah has studied theater, dance, fine art and design at the college level. Her work has been featured in听The New York Times.

In February structural engineer from Lakewood, Colo.,听Jerod Faris听(CivEngr, Math鈥03, MCivEngr鈥12) returned home from a project trip to Santa Mar铆a del Real, Olancho, Honduras. Jerod was part of team of architects and engineers from across North America who volunteered their time with Engineering Ministries International鈥檚 America Latina office in Costa Rica. The team spent weeks in Honduras developing the concepts and designs for Cl铆nica El Buen Pastor.

Assistant professor at the University of Denver听Erica Chenoweth听(MPolSci鈥04, PhD鈥07) won the 2013 University of Louisville Grawemeyer Award for Ideas Improving World Order. Erica works in the Josef Korbel School of International Studies and won the award for ideas set forth in the book she co-authored,听Why Civil Resistance Works: The Strategic Logic of Non-Violent Conflict.听Through their research of uprisings involving more than 1,000 people from 1906 through 2006, the authors learned nonviolent campaigns succeeded twice as often as the violent ones and that governments where peaceful resistance took place were far more likely to become or remain stable democracies.
