Emma Coburn听(Mktg鈥13) added another chapter to the storied recent history for CU runners in the 3,000-meter steeplechase by winning the NCAA title in the event in Eugene, Ore.
The Buffs have won six of the last eight NCAA steeplechase crowns, with听Jenny Barringer Simpson听(PolSci鈥09) prevailing in 2006, 鈥08 and 鈥09, Coburn in 2011 and 鈥13, and senior听Shalaya Kipp听in 2012.
In addition to her two NCAA steeplechase titles, Coburn captured the NCAA indoor mile cham-
pionship earlier this year.
鈥淭here are a lot of things necessary to be good and to stay good,鈥 CU assistant coach Heather Burroughs told NCAA.com. 鈥(Coburn) checks the boxes: talented and motivated and durable and courageous and calm and patient.鈥
At this year鈥檚 steeplechase, the 2012 Olympian ran a time of 9:35.38, the fifth-best in NCAA history. All of the top five times belong to CU runners.
鈥淭ime-wise and performance/place-wise, I feel like I fulfilled everything that I came here hoping I could do,鈥 Coburn told NCAA.com. 鈥淚 didn鈥檛 even think I would make varsity, so to be a national champion three times over and being a World Championships (team) member, it has passed all my expectations.鈥
Coburn听signed with New Balance in the summer and will be coached by campus coaches Marc Wetmore听and Burroughs while training with New Balance teammates Simpson and Kipp.
