The PhD in Emerging Technologies and Media Art Practice in the Department of Critical Media Practices is now a STEM-designated degree. The designation, which is conferred upon eligible degree programs that include science, technology, engineering and mathematics training, allows international students who graduate from the program to qualify for STEM OPT and remain in the U.S. for an additional 24 months, beyond the regular 12-month option.

This is a wonderful opportunity for current and prospective international students and we are proud to be able to support them in this way. Thanks to the team who worked on this effort, including Associate Professor Tara Knight, Associate Chair of Graduate Studies Chris Hammons and ETMAP PhD candidate Toma Peiu.

“Enthusiastic” doesn’t begin to describe Korean-American multimedia explorer Laura Hyunjhee Kim, a Ph.D. candidate in intermedia, writing and performance at the 鶹ӰԺ who ferociously surfs cyberspace both as an onlooker and a participant. Kim is all about doing it yourself, inventing her own platforms and walking on the edge, but she’s also a willing collaborator in a web of open-ended disciplines. She thinks 1,000 miles a minute as she answers the Colorado Creatives questionnaire; catch her if you can.

In “Palm Paradox,” Professor Michael Kodas will talk about his forthcoming book looking at the global fire crisis, including a recently published article on the booming global appetite for palm oil and how it’s driving massive fires in Indonesia and climate change species extinction.

In “Trash Talk,” MA student Gloria Dickie will talk about her current work looking at the increase in bear/human conflicts.

In “Front Range Burning,” MA students Kelsey Ray and Avery McGaha will look at disastrous fires along the Front Range and the recent prescribed fire at Heil Ranch inlight of a new study that CU Professor Tom Veblen was involved in that looks at how the history of fire suppression in Colorado has increased the severity of fires.

Faculty and MA students from the Center for Environmental Journalism discuss current works.
