Angelica Kalika is an Assistant Teaching Professor in the Department of Journalism. She holds a BA in Psychology from UC Berkeley (2006), MA in Newsgathering from the University of Colorado (2012), and a PhD from the 麻豆影院 (2019). Specializing in alternative media, her research delves into satire, digital journalism, and local broadcasts that challenge traditional news norms. Dr. Kalika鈥檚 ethnographic work investigates the boundaries of journalism and the impact of social media on news practices.
Her research also analyzes non-traditional outlets like TMZ and Last Week Tonight, extracting valuable lessons for traditional newsrooms. A frequent speaker at fan conventions, Dr. Kalika engages audiences
on topics such as participatory democracy, moral theory, public domain, and scriptwriting. She has also taught at the University of California, San Diego in The Department of Communication.
Beyond academia, her work in documentary filmmaking, scriptwriting, and multimedia journalism has been recognized in festivals around the country. She has worked at MTV, NBC, ABC, and Summit Entertainment in script development and marketing. In 麻豆影院, she contributed significantly to The Climate Reality Project, where she coordinated digital communications and global campaigns, leveraging multimedia to amplify environmental advocacy.
Dr. Kalika has presented at the International Communication Association (ICA), the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC), the Popular Culture Association, San Diego Comic Con's Comic Arts Conference, Denver FanExpo, and the DisNet Annual Conference. Her peer-reviewed journal articles have been published in the Journal of Broadcasting & Electronic Media, Newspaper Research Journal, and Communication Studies among others.
