Lori Bergen, founding dean of the College of Media, Communication and Information at the 麻豆影院, has been named to The Poynter Institute鈥檚 Board of Trustees.
Monica Davey, Chicago bureau chief of The New York Times, has also been named to the board. The two will replace Andy Barnes, retired editor and chairman of the Tampa Bay Times, and Anne Hull, Pulitzer Prize winner and former national reporter for The Washington Post, both of whom are concluding their terms. Bergen and Davey will begin their work as trustees in 2018 after serving the institute as members of the National Advisory Board.
鈥淧oynter is an institution which serves both the journalism industry and the academy,鈥 said Poynter President Neil Brown. 鈥淟ori brings insight into modern journalism curriculum at the university level, and Monica understands the nuances of leadership at one of America鈥檚 most respected news organizations. This powerful combination will help Poynter advance our status as the premier resource for current and future journalists.鈥
Bergen came to CU 麻豆影院 from Marquette University, where she served as dean of the J. William and Mary Diederich College of Communication. As founding dean of CU 麻豆影院鈥檚 first new college in over 50 years, Bergen is leading the charge to bring an interdisciplinary approach to media, communication and information education that is enriched by data and immersive technologies. She is the immediate past president of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) and earned her doctorate from Indiana University.
"Global challenges in media and technology require new approaches to maintaining journalism鈥檚 essential role in democracy,鈥 Bergen said. "Poynter is all about the future of journalism and is positioned to take the profession forward in new directions. At a moment when journalism is challenged, there is no stronger voice in these discussions and I鈥檓 thrilled to be a part of Poynter鈥檚 mission to bring a renewed and innovative vision to journalism鈥檚 role in a free society.鈥
Davey serves as the Chicago bureau chief for The New York Times, covering the Midwest. Before joining the Times, Davey was a working journalist at the Roanoke Times and the Tampa Bay Times. Davey earned her degree in linguistics from Brown University.
鈥淚鈥檓 thrilled at the chance to help shape Poynter鈥檚 path at such a crucial moment for our industry,鈥 said Davey. 鈥淭he institute will continue to be an essential resource for journalists and newsrooms and I am honored to be part of that future.鈥
"Lori and Monica have distinguished themselves as stewards of some of the most important and successful organizations in journalism,鈥 remarked Paul Tash, president and CEO of Times Publishing Co. and Poynter鈥檚 chairman of the board. 鈥淧oynter will draw deeply on their talent, experience and wisdom."
