Professor Lovejoy received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles. His first book, , is a biography of an enslaved African at the root of an African-Cuban religion, commonly known as SanterÃa. It won the Chief Isaac Oluwole Delano best book prize for Yoruba Studies. He is co-editor of the volume  (2020) and  (2022). Professor Lovejoy is director of the Digital Slavery Research Laboratory, which has received support from the Andrew W. Mellon New Directions Fellowship, National Endowment for the Humanities, among others. He also sits on the board of directors for the Black American West Museum & Heritage Centre in Five Points, Denver.
