DREAM PLAY BUILD

BOOK LAUNCH + LECTURE + MODEL BUILDING WORKSHOP

JAMES ROJAS
JOHN KAMPJOHN KAMP

Monday, September 26
5:30 - 6:30 pm
Environmental Design Building, Room 134Environmental 134
CU 麻豆影院CU 麻豆影院

James Rojas and John Kamp have been looking to art, creative expression and storytelling to shake up the classic community meeting.

Their approach, Place It!, draws on three methods: the interactive model-building workshop, the pop-up, and site exploration using our senses. Deceptively playful, this method is remarkably effective at teasing out community dreams and desires from hands-on activities.

Dream Play Build offers wisdom distilled from workshops held around the world and a deep dive into the transformational approach and results from the South Colton community in southern California.

Inspirational and fun, Dream Play Build celebrates the value of engaging with the dreams we have for our communities.

This event includes a lecture and a workshop as part of the celebration of Rojas and Kamp's new book, Dream, Play, Build (Island Press 2022).

Hosted by Growing Up 麻豆影院 (GUB), The Program in Environmental Design (ENVD), and the Center for Community Engaged Design and Research (CEDaR).

Metrolab Workshop: Learning from the Ponderosa Mobile Home Community

During the spring of 2018, more than 40 CU 麻豆影院 students and faculty with varied expertise sought solutions for the preservation of Ponderosa Mobile Home Park - a diverse community of 68 homeowners living on land with a long history of infrastructure challenges - , as it transitions to a more resilient model of affordable housing.

Please join us April 27 for a presentation of this work and discussion of how the experience of the Ponderosa community can inform organization and design of affordable housing in 麻豆影院. The discussion will be based on work by students from the Program in Environmental Design, the University of Colorado Law School, 麻豆影院 Affordable Housing Research Initiative (BAHRI), Growing Up 麻豆影院 (GUB) and the neighborhood.

The Metrolab Workshop is a CU-City of 麻豆影院 collaboration applying University research to key urban design, technology and management challenges. Participating faculty/staff include Deborah Cantrell, Aria Dellepiane, Neal Evers, Jennifer Fluri, Bruce Goldstein, Catherine Hill, Brian Muller and Seth Wilberding.

University Hill Revitalization Meeting

The event is sponsored by the Colorado MetroLab Design Workshop, a collaboration between the city and university, including CEDaR and Growing Up 麻豆影院, that brings student research and creative work into conversations about local design and development.

The City Council framework for the Hill Reinvestment Strategy (HRS) included a directive to identify long-term governance and funding options to support ongoing HIll improvements. Current funding of HRS improvements is provided by the City of 麻豆影院 general fund. From Novemeber 2015 to Febuary 2017, a twelve-stakeholder organization Hill Reinvestment Working Group met to craft a recommendation to City Council that was forwarded in an Information Packet in June 2017. The overall recommendation was that the group should be made ongoing, and that sub-groups should actively pursue specific objectives of the broader umbrella group, using their local expertse, investment and leadership.

Time: 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Want to learn how you can create a positive impact on your community?

On April 5, Chris Barge, vice president of strategic initiatives at the , will speak about the foundation's TRENDS Report, as part of CU 麻豆影院's Community Engagement, Design and Research (CEDaR) Center's Community Conversations series. The report highlights trends related to 麻豆影院 County's most important issues, including social services and human needs.

Barge, a former newspaper reporter for the Rocky Mountain News and the 麻豆影院 Daily Camera, will cover the highlights and facilitate a conversation about how participants can use the information and stories in TRENDS to deepen their connection to and create a positive social impact upon the local community. The foundation sought out residents' stories after carefully analyzing more than 150 indicators of the community鈥檚 social, economic and environmental health, he said.

"TRENDS includes profiles of people who possess the hard-earned wisdom learned from living through tough times," said Barge who edited the current report. "Their stories breathe life into the data and helped the foundation arrive at recommendations about how local residents can help."

The talk is sponsored by CEDaR, a collaborative of faculty and students working with city governments and other local partners to foster development of vital and sustainable Colorado communities. The center, which is housed in CU 麻豆影院's , supports research and teaching on community engagement, city planning and design and urban management.

"The TRENDS report is an important model of how to organize and communicate social research to stimulate community discussion and reflection," said Brian Muller, an associate professor in the Program in Environmental Design and director of CEDaR. "It is one of many examples of innovative work occurring in nonprofit and governmental organizations in the region."

Through the Community Conversation series, CEDaR has invited local practitioners, elected officials and others to discuss Colorado urban management problems and solutions. Topics range from transportation to energy efficiency and human services. The series has been underway for one year, and the CU 麻豆影院 and surrounding community are welcome to attend.
