Catalog Description
An introduction Chinese media cultures of the 20th century, with an emphasis on photography, cinema, popular music, and print. The course places these productions in context, examining the complex intertwinement of culture, technology, and politics in China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan from the turn of the last century to the beginning of the twenty-first. We will be thinking about the ways in which media inscribe or problematize global racial hierarchies, gender dynamics, and membership in collectivities. Students will also be introduced to a number of methodologies in media historiography and cultural studies. Taught in English. Prerequisite .
