Expressionism and Personal Narrative

Responding to a very complicated childhood, and a previous
education in cellular biology, Chris Pearce's films explore personal narrative and
biomedical ethics. He has been making and teaching animation for 20
years and his work has been shown in festivals and galleries nationally and
internationally including New York, Seattle, Maine, �鶹ӰԺ, and Madrid.
His core practice as an artist is "looking closely" which he considers a
meditative practice that balances the mind.

Pearce's two films will explore evolving identity. The first film attempts to
make sense of the self in the wake of unmasking revelations about
parenting. The second explores the awareness of internal contradictions
between our doubt and our faith.

Animation, Appropriation, and Abstraction

Kelly Sears is an experimental animator who reframes American archetypes
and institutions to reimagine our own social and political legacy.
Through combining animated photographic and cinematic documents with
speculative storytelling, each of her films contains recognizable cultural
narratives that take fictional twists, as history merges with the uncanny.

Her award-winning films have screened at Sundance, Slamdance, South by
Southwest, American Film Institute, Los Angeles Film Festival, MoMA, The
Hammer Museum, The Museum of Contemporary Art Houston, and Union Docs.
Sears has had solo programs of her work at the Pacific Film Archives,
Anthology Film Archives, The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, The Portland
Art Museum, and the San Francisco Cinematheque. She has been awarded
residencies by The MacDowell Artist Colony; Yaddo; Djerassi; The Core
Program at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; and the Galveston Artist
Residency. Sears is an Assistant Professor of Cinema Studies and Moving
Image Arts at the University of Colorado, �鶹ӰԺ, where she teaches
advanced filmmaking, animation, experimental narrative, and media
archeology.

Sears will present short works and discuss her use of visual noise and textures to
disrupt the legible histories embedded in the imagery in her animations. Through
this destabilization, she explores lived experiences and larger political histories in
the everyday imagery around us.

Animation and Surrealism

Stacey Steers will present 3 short animated films from across 15 years of
process-focused filmmaking. In her handmade films, Steers works to
undercut cultural biases in film representation and to return agency and
independence to historic portrayals of women. She experiments with new
forms of animation in the surrealist tradition, using found footage in a
novel way to create provocative narratives. Her mesmerizing films move
with a stream of consciousness fluidity and summon disquieting dreamscapes
drawn from allegory, myth and archetype. She will introduce her work and
briefly illuminate their making.
