Site Specific Screendance

Screendance is a relatively new discipline that merges arts and technology, and more specifically film, or video and dance. Since its inception in the 1950s, Screendance has been a powerful tool of artistic exploration for the dance artist. Similarly, site-specific dance emerged as an extension of the post-modern choreographers during the 1960s and 70s, reshaping conventional notions of dance performances. A site specific dance generates movement that is primarily informed by a specific location, as opposed to being created irrespective of place.

A Mexican video-choreographer living in the USA, Ana Baer Carillo work encompasses a variety of dance for camera work, as well as interdisciplinary performances and choreography. Internationally active since 1990, she has been commissioned to create video installations, multimedia work and/or choreography in Chile, Costa Rica, Uruguay, Guatemala, Greece, Spain, France, and multiple venues in Germany, UK, Mexico and USA. Her screen dance work has been selected by numerous International film festivals, such as AM Egypt Film Festival, Miami Epic Festival, Dance Screen Brighton and Thessaloniki International Film Festival, among others. Carillo is a founding member of Avant Media, and Merge Dance Company and has been Artistic co-Director of Sans Souci Festival of Dance Cinema since 2004. In 2014 she co-founded WECreate Productions. She is currently teaching video dance and classical dance at Texas State University.

Screendance has the opportunity to navigate inner and outer worlds, place serving as a stand-in for emotional states. A collaborator within dance cinema since 1991, Erika will examine her body of work and the work of other dance film makers who traverse interior landscapes through the vehicle of locale.

Randall is a teacher, choreographer and filmmaker who has an MFA in Choreography from Ohio State University, a BA in Dance from the University of Washington. She has worked with Teena Marie Custer, Sara Hook, David Parker and the Bang Group, Michelle Ellsworth, Gabriel Masson, Megan Odom, Anna Sapozhnikov, Rebecca-Nettl-Fiol, Esteban Donoso, the Mark Morris Dance Group and Buglisi/Foreman Dance. Her dancefilms, “Down for the Count,” “more,"“self defense,” and “less,” created with film collaborators, Daniel Beahm and Markas Henry, have screened at festivals such the Sans Souci Dance Cinema Festival, the Starz Denver Film Festival, the Florence GLBT Film Festival in Italy, and the Façade Film Festival in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. www.teahmbeahm.com.

Randall co-wrote, directed, produced and choreographed the feature dance film, Leading Ladies, which premiered at the Sonoma International Film Festival in 2010, and has played to sold-out audiences at over 65 festivals world-wide, including: New York’s NewFest, Los Angeles’ Outfest, San Francisco’s Frameline, the Palm Springs International Film Festival, the Starz Denver Film Festival, the Cannes Independent Film Festival, and won “Best Feature” at the Palm Beach Women’s Film Festival. Web-Based Screen Dances and Surveillance

Wednesday, November 15th, 12:00-1:00, in ATLAS 311

Ellsworth will show some of her web-based dances as well as demonstrate several “over-the-counter counter-terrorism” protocols for avoiding surveillance and interpersonal drama.

Though not a licensed scientist, technologist, or carpenter, Michelle Ellsworth nevertheless co-mingles these disciplines with dance in an attempt to choreograph coping strategies and wood-based and web-based solutions, and also to demonstrate some peculiar geopolitical (and personal) phenomena. The pharmaceutical and political potential of dance interests her, as well as the value of broken and labor-intensive ideas.

Among Ellsworth’s honors are a Guggenheim Fellowship (2016), Doris Duke Impact Award (2015), a NEFA National Dance Project Grant (2014 and 2017), a Creative Capital Fellowship (2013), and a USA Artists Knight Fellowship in Dance (2012). She has received three National Performance Network Creation Fund Commissions (2004, 2007, and 2016).
