Expressionism and Personal Narrative

September 18

Responding to a very complicated childhood, and a previous
education in cellular biology, Chris Pearce's films explore personal narrative and
biomedical ethics. He has been making and teaching animation for 20
years and his work has been shown in festivals and galleries nationally and
internationally including New York, Seattle, Maine, �鶹ӰԺ, and Madrid.
His core practice as an artist is "looking closely" which he considers a
meditative practice that balances the mind.

Pearce's two films will explore evolving identity. The first film attempts to
make sense of the self in the wake of unmasking revelations about
parenting. The second explores the awareness of internal contradictions
between our doubt and our faith.

Animation, Appropriation, and Abstraction

Kelly Sears is an experimental animator who reframes American archetypes
and institutions to reimagine our own social and political legacy.
Through combining animated photographic and cinematic documents with
speculative storytelling, each of her films contains recognizable cultural
narratives that take fictional twists, as history merges with the uncanny.

Her award-winning films have screened at Sundance, Slamdance, South by
Southwest, American Film Institute, Los Angeles Film Festival, MoMA, The
Hammer Museum, The Museum of Contemporary Art Houston, and Union Docs.
Sears has had solo programs of her work at the Pacific Film Archives,
Anthology Film Archives, The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, The Portland
Art Museum, and the San Francisco Cinematheque. She has been awarded
residencies by The MacDowell Artist Colony; Yaddo; Djerassi; The Core
Program at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; and the Galveston Artist
Residency. Sears is an Assistant Professor of Cinema Studies and Moving
Image Arts at the University of Colorado, �鶹ӰԺ, where she teaches
advanced filmmaking, animation, experimental narrative, and media
archeology.

Sears will present short works and discuss her use of visual noise and textures to
disrupt the legible histories embedded in the imagery in her animations. Through
this destabilization, she explores lived experiences and larger political histories in
the everyday imagery around us.

Stacey Steers will present 3 short animated films from across 15 years of
process-focused filmmaking. In her handmade films, Steers works to
undercut cultural biases in film representation and to return agency and
independence to historic portrayals of women. She experiments with new
forms of animation in the surrealist tradition, using found footage in a
novel way to create provocative narratives. Her mesmerizing films move
with a stream of consciousness fluidity and summon disquieting dreamscapes
drawn from allegory, myth and archetype. She will introduce her work and
briefly illuminate their making.

Her scholarly writings have been published by MIT Press, Routledge, and the University of Minnesota. Writings about her work have appeared widely and most notably in anthologies and survey texts such as “Digital Art” (Thames and Hudson, World of Art Series), “Walking and Mapping” (MIT Press), “Information Arts” (MIT Press), “Ubiquitous Computing: Complexity and Culture” (Routledge) and “Mobile Audience” (Springer).Teri Rueb is an artist and Professor of Critical Media Practices at the University of Colorado, �鶹ӰԺ. Her practice unfolds in the extended fields of sound, mobile media art and land-based critical spatial practices. She has created GPS-based interactive sound installations since 1996 and has received awards including a Prix Ars Electronica Award and nominations for the CalArts Alpert Award, the Rockefeller New Media Award and the Boston ICA Foster Prize. Her work has been supported by the Ucross Foundation, the Arnold Arboretum / Harvard University, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, the Santa Fe Art Institute, La Panacée, Edith Rüss Site for New Media, The Banff Center for the Arts, the Boston Institute of Contemporary Art, Artslink, Turbulence.org, and various State Arts Councils. She lectures and presents widely at venues including Ars Electronica, ISEA, SIGGRAPH, Transmediale and IRCAM.

She has played key roles in developing new programs, curricula and doctoral degrees at the Rhode Island School of Design and the University at Buffalo, among others. She holds a doctorate from Harvard University Graduate School of Design, a master’s degree from New York University, Tisch School of the Arts, Interactive Telecommunications Program and a bachelor’s degree in Art and Literary and Cultural Studies (honors) from Carnegie Mellon University.

Recent Documentary Work on Nature/Culture in the Labor of Science and Conservation

Assistant Professor of Critical Media Practices

In this luncheon series, Stephanie Spray will talk about ongoing work on two films in-progress, Edge of Time, which she shot aboard a scientific drilling ship for ten weeks in the Pacific and Indian Oceans, and a new film in development, Patagonia Park. In both works, Stephanie is interested in how the nature/culture divide is preserved or challenged by the labor of individuals doing hands on work in service of either science or conservation. She will screen clips from both works in progress.

Stephanie Spray is a nonfiction filmmaker, anthropologist, and Assistant Professor of Critical Media Practices at the �鶹ӰԺ. Her work conjugates ethnographic methodologies with a critical nonfiction media practice, for cinema and art exhibition contexts. Her films have screened at Locarno, New York, Art of the Real, TIFF, CPH:DOX, Viennale, RIDM, AFI, Rotterdam, Open City Docs, BAFICI, and Anthology Film Archives, among others, and museums such as MoMA, the Whitney, the National Gallery, and Louisiana MoMA. The last film in her Nepal series, Manakamana, is in the permanent collection of MoMA New York and won numerous awards, including a Golden Leopard at Locarno.

Site Specific Screendance

Screendance is a relatively new discipline that merges arts and technology, and more specifically film, or video and dance. Since its inception in the 1950s, Screendance has been a powerful tool of artistic exploration for the dance artist. Similarly, site-specific dance emerged as an extension of the post-modern choreographers during the 1960s and 70s, reshaping conventional notions of dance performances. A site specific dance generates movement that is primarily informed by a specific location, as opposed to being created irrespective of place.

A Mexican video-choreographer living in the USA, Ana Baer Carillo work encompasses a variety of dance for camera work, as well as interdisciplinary performances and choreography. Internationally active since 1990, she has been commissioned to create video installations, multimedia work and/or choreography in Chile, Costa Rica, Uruguay, Guatemala, Greece, Spain, France, and multiple venues in Germany, UK, Mexico and USA. Her screen dance work has been selected by numerous International film festivals, such as AM Egypt Film Festival, Miami Epic Festival, Dance Screen Brighton and Thessaloniki International Film Festival, among others. Carillo is a founding member of Avant Media, and Merge Dance Company and has been Artistic co-Director of Sans Souci Festival of Dance Cinema since 2004. In 2014 she co-founded WECreate Productions. She is currently teaching video dance and classical dance at Texas State University.

Screendance has the opportunity to navigate inner and outer worlds, place serving as a stand-in for emotional states. A collaborator within dance cinema since 1991, Erika will examine her body of work and the work of other dance film makers who traverse interior landscapes through the vehicle of locale.

Randall is a teacher, choreographer and filmmaker who has an MFA in Choreography from Ohio State University, a BA in Dance from the University of Washington. She has worked with Teena Marie Custer, Sara Hook, David Parker and the Bang Group, Michelle Ellsworth, Gabriel Masson, Megan Odom, Anna Sapozhnikov, Rebecca-Nettl-Fiol, Esteban Donoso, the Mark Morris Dance Group and Buglisi/Foreman Dance. Her dancefilms, “Down for the Count,” “more,"“self defense,” and “less,” created with film collaborators, Daniel Beahm and Markas Henry, have screened at festivals such the Sans Souci Dance Cinema Festival, the Starz Denver Film Festival, the Florence GLBT Film Festival in Italy, and the Façade Film Festival in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. www.teahmbeahm.com.

Web-Based Screen Dances and Surveillance

Ellsworth will show some of her web-based dances as well as demonstrate several “over-the-counter counter-terrorism” protocols for avoiding surveillance and interpersonal drama.

Though not a licensed scientist, technologist, or carpenter, Michelle Ellsworth nevertheless co-mingles these disciplines with dance in an attempt to choreograph coping strategies and wood-based and web-based solutions, and also to demonstrate some peculiar geopolitical (and personal) phenomena. The pharmaceutical and political potential of dance interests her, as well as the value of broken and labor-intensive ideas.

Among Ellsworth’s honors are a Guggenheim Fellowship (2016), Doris Duke Impact Award (2015), a NEFA National Dance Project Grant (2014 and 2017), a Creative Capital Fellowship (2013), and a USA Artists Knight Fellowship in Dance (2012). She has received three National Performance Network Creation Fund Commissions (2004, 2007, and 2016).
