Daniel Party IIThe American Music Research Center will host Dr. Daniel Party,听Pontificia Universidad Cat贸lica de Chile, on Monday, February 2听to present his work on听"The uses of V铆ctor Jara in Chilean Social Movements (2009-2019)." 听As听has been widely noted,听the Chilean social uprising of October 2019 had as an unofficial anthem V铆ctor Jara鈥檚 song 鈥淓l derecho de vivir en paz.鈥澨 To help clarify听the significance of this gesture, Dr. Party will听trace in his presentation听the ways in which Jara and his music have been used in Chile since 2009.

This free and听public talk will听take place at 2 pm in CASE E351 on CU 麻豆影院 campus听and will听kick-off this听semester's Musicology & Music Theory Colloquium Series, a College of Music semester-long tradition听that听offers听students,听faculty, other CU campus departments, and the听public a unique opportunity to meet and hear from some of the leading national and international researchers in music theory and听ethnomusicology, including topics in听Western,听African, Japanese, Latin American, American Indian, and Euro-American musics.

Daniel Party听hails from the University of Pennsylvania where he was awarded a听Ph.D in music history and is听now Professor at听Pontificia Universidad Cat贸lica de Chile. 听He听is a popular music scholar whoes main research interest is听music under dictatorship, particularly under Pinochet's Chile and Franco's Spain.听Dr. Party says, "While most research on popular music and dictatorship deals with either state-sponsored music or protest songs, mine focuses on mainstream musics and musicians that remained detached from party politics." 听

He is also interested in U.S. Latino听music and migration and in gender studies. 听He was听Associate Professor at听Saint Mary's College, a visiting Professor听at听Tulane University,听University of Oregon,听Brown听University,听University of Georgia and has a long list of publications, fellowships, awards,听grants and invited guest lectures and workships which are听.
