Remembering Challenger at 30 Years
Fallen NASA astronauts, including AES alumni Ellison Onizuka (AeroEngrÌý’69), who died in the Challenger accident, and Kalpana Chawla (AeroEngr PhD ’88), who died in the Columbia accident, were recognized on campus in January.
CU-Â鶹ӰԺ holds an annual event and procession commemorating the loss of the Challenger and Columbia Space Shuttles. 2016 takes on special significance as it marks 30 years since the Challenger accident, which occurred January 28, 1986.
Cadets from the Air Force ROTC and Arnold Air Society organized the event. The commemoration January 30 began at the Regent Building with an invocation and presentation of colors, followed by a procession to the Columbia Memorial at Fiske Planetarium, and then to the Challenger/Onizuka Memorial at the Engineering Center.
To mark the 30th anniversary, Denver 9 News NBC created a documentary special. Numerous CU faculty members were interviewed for the project. More information about the special is available here:
